new.shiver: the elders

April 21 – May 22, 2022

Satchel Projects is thrilled to present the elders, the debut solo exhibition of the anonymous artist known as new.shiver, on view from April 21 through May 21, 2022.

The intimately-scaled paintings in the elders were developed through a process of accretion and removal, some taking up to 20 years to create. The built-up, impasto surfaces seem to have evolved over geological time, suggesting atmospheric and physical forces at work. The color ranges from nocturnal, glinting and smoldering to verdant, lush, and limpid.

In the artist’s words, the paintings “began developing their own terrain — with steep ravines and caverns, or maze-like structures, and cobbled shelters within chaos. Their dedicated accumula-tion, rough and craggy, with unique inclusions, developing slowly like minerals.”

The devotion to distinctive mark-marking as a signifier for the materiality of paint brings to mind contemporary minimalists like James Hayward or Alan Ebnother. It’s clear, however, from the deliberation of color which has an almost post-Impressionist read, that new.shiver’s sensibility extends to paintings’ illusionistic space as well.

Within this spatial/material exchange, the processes of making and observing are synthesized. The corporeal presence of the work bridges the distance between artist and viewer, rewarding a close look and slow read with a complex ecosystem of form and color.

New.shiver is an artist living and working in the United States.
